Jeffrey Harris pulled into Colorado on Saturday night to help his sister and her 19-month-old boy, who had been stranded in town through a run of bad luck. Soon after arriving in the Walmart parking lot, where people in cars sometimes camp for the night before moving on, he and his friends tried to protect a woman who was being beaten by her boyfriend, he said, but then her boyfriend rammed his car into Harris’ van, damaging the battery and tires.

Then his nephew was attacked by their dog.

“I think I’ve cried more this week than I’ve ever cried,” said Harris, who declined to say more about the dog incident.
